NORTH LIGHT YACHT CLUB TO HOST SIGNATURE FISHING TOURNAMENT
- Posted: 12/30/09
Event to Feature art show, children’s activities, live entertainment and more

Niceville, Fla. (December 30, 2009) — North Light Yacht Club has announced the dates for its inaugural signature fishing tournament to be held in the summer of 2010. The “North Light Swordfish and Tuna Challenge” is scheduled to take place June 17th – 20th. The tournament, which is open to center consoles and sport fishing boats of all sizes, will feature premiere Swordfish, Tuna, Dolphin and Wahoo divisions, and an opt-in Blue Marlin division. Mark Waltman, tournament director, believes that the tournament will be a great opportunity to enjoy a weekend on the water. “The North Light Swordfish and Tuna Challenge will provide families and friends an affordable opportunity to spend quality time together, while enjoying the natural beauty of the Emerald Coast,” Waltman said, “Fishing is an equal opportunity sport: short, tall, old or young, everyone has an opportunity to catch the winning fish.”

The event will begin on June 17th with a Captain’s meeting and poolside Kick-Off party, featuring live entertainment, at North Light Marina. Fishing teams may depart from any location along the Gulf Coast; however, a registered representative must be in attendance at the Captain’s meeting. Weigh-ins will begin on June 18th at 7 p.m. with all weighed fish going to support a local charity food bank. The event site will be open at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and will feature children’s activities, an art show, food, live entertainment and sponsor village. The tournament will wrap up with an awards ceremony breakfast to be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The North Light Swordfish & Tuna Challenge is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the Niceville economy, through revenues generated by lodging, dining, and increased retail sales provided by visitors traveling from outside the area to participate in the tournament. Rick Harper, director of the Haas Center for Business Research and Economic Development at the University of West Florida, believes that the event will have a positive economic impact on the Twin Cities area. “Economic impact is created by bringing new spending to an area. Events like the North Light Swordfish and Tuna Challenge create a positive economic impact by drawing large numbers of visitors to the area, which pours new dollars into our local economy,” Harper said. “As a general rule, for every million dollars in spending, 18-20 new jobs are generated. This impact may be greater if the majority of the spending occurs at local restaurants and retailers, rather than chains, as these businesses tend to reinvest more of their dollars back into the local economy.”

Sponsorship opportunities are now available for the tournament, with community sponsorship levels starting at $250. For more information on sponsorship packages or angler registration, contact Phyillis McAndrews, tournament coordinator, at 850-678-2836.
