NORTH LIGHT YACHT CLUB RECEIVES STATE GRANT TO CONSTRUCT ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE PUMPOUT STATION
- Posted: 10/28/09
Niceville, Fla. (October 29, 2009) — North Light Yacht Club recently was awarded a state grant to construct its new pumpout station at the Niceville marina. Funded as a result of the Clean Vessel Act of 1992, the grant covered 75 percent of the costs to install a sewage pumpout facility that meets all of the requirements to qualify. The pump out station is now fully operational and open to the public for a fee of $5.00 per pump out.

The Clean Vessel Act was designed to reduce pollution from vessel sewage discharges, prohibiting the discharge of raw sewage into fresh water or within coastal salt-water limits. The act established a federal grant program which to date has awarded nearly $150 million for states to install thousands of sewage pumpout stations. The program, housed within the Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Sustainable Initiatives, provides grants for construction and installation of sewage pumpout facilities and purchase of pumpout boats and educational programs for boaters.

North Light also is actively pursuing designation as a Clean Marina. The Florida Clean Marina program is a voluntary designation program that recognizes those who take a proactive approach to environmental stewardship. To earn designation as a Clean Marina, facilities must implement a set of strict environmental measures designed to protect Florida’s waterways. These measures address critical environmental issues such as sensitive habitat, waste management, storm-water runoff, spill prevention and emergency preparedness. “The marina at North Light Yacht Club was built to exceed the requirements for this voluntary designation,” said Mark Waltman, marina manager, “and we are 100% committed to protecting and preserving our environment for our community, state and future residents of Florida.”
